History of pizza in the U.S

In the United States, the first pizza was known as Lombardi’s which was created by Gennaro Lombardi. After this, the dish got a hike in the northeast region. In fact, in New Jersey, the Italian Americans opened their pizza shop in 1920 and in 1930 the dish got popularity across the East Coast.

Oldest Pizza in New Jersey

In 1912 in Trenton, the papa’s tomato pies are the oldest pizza shop in New Jersey. It is also known as the father of New Jersey pizza. The restaurant moved to Robbinsville in 2013 but still will be known as the oldest pizza shop in the U.S. you will be amazed to know that the shop is running by the third generation and still you will not see any difference in taste. They are still famous because of the taste of the pie. Nobody knows the secret of the recipe yet.

Chicago is known for its deep-dish pizza whereas New Jersey is known for Trenton tomato pie. To make the delicious pizza they add mozzarella cheese with lots of different toppings according to the craving of the customers. But instead of putting toppings on the sauce, they put it under the tomato sauce. In traditional Italian style tomato pizza comes in different shapes such as square as well as in rectangular shape. To make the pie, they make thicker focaccia like dough as the crust with no cheese is added in it whereas Trenton tomato pizza comes in a circular shape having a thin crust with lots of mozzarella cheese in it.

Origin of Trenton Tomato Pizza

The first pie was created by Joe’s Tomato Pie in Trenton. It was made in 1910 and he was the first person to make the pizza for the very first time in Trenton style pizza. You will be astonished to know that the owner of the papa’s used to work under Joe’s before opening his pizza shop for 2 years. That’s the place where he explored the dish and learned how to make the delicious pizza. Both Joe and Papa originated the pie in Trenton that’s why people call Trenton tomato pie.

Pizza with thin-crust

Apart from Trenton style tomato pies, there was one other type of pizza which gained popularity among the citizens is thin crust pizza. The pizza was made with the thin and crispy crust which was loved by most of the people. 

The oldest thin crust pizza in New Jersey is Federici in Freehold. The owner of the pizza shop was Frank and Ester Federici. He stated his restaurants by selling simple food items.
